This morning (January 12th, 2023), The Costume Designers Guild announced nominations for the 25th Costume Designers Guild Awards. These nominations span eight different categories representing costume designers in film, television, and short-form design.
The nominations include some major films (likely to be nominated for an Academy Award), including Avatar: The Way of Water, Elvis, The Woman King, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, for which costume designer Ruth E. Carter designed the costumes.
The box-office isn’t stealing all of the spotlight as perhaps some of the greatest contest lies in the “Excellence in Sci-Fi / Fantasy Television” category. The critically acclaimed television series House of the Dragon and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power make their costume awards debut. Plus returning to the costume awards is 2022 EMMY Award-Winner Laura Montgomery who designed the costumes for What We Do In The Shadows, and Emmy nominee Lucinda Wright for her work on The Witcher: Blood Origin.
Costume designer legend Deborah L. Scott (Avatar: The Way of Water, Titanic, Back to the Future) will be honored with the career achievement award at the awards show, taking place on February 27th at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles.
